Law and Order SVU has been home to television’s most iconic show opening – two words: DUN. DUN. – for a historic 20 years.

The 20th season of the hit crime show is set to air in the US next month, tying the series neck-and-neck with the original Law & Order and Gunsmoke for the title of ‘longest-running scripted live-action American drama series.’

The show has celebrated the milestone with the release of a new poster for the 20th season. The poster is simply captioned “20 Years Strong” and shows the lead cast striking some mighty power poses.

We can expect the return of our favourite detective cast, starring Mariska Hargitay, Kelli Giddish, Peter Scanavino, Philip Winchester and Ice-T.

This season has been reported to also include some guest star appearances, such as Chicago Justices’ Carl Weathers, Nip/Tuck’s Dylan Walsh and Scandal’s George Newbern.

Mariska who has starred on the series since its beginnings in 1999, has become an icon for the long-running crime series.

The actress recently spoke to E! News about her involvement in the new season.

“I’m still processing it because it’s a lifetime of processing. I’m just so full of gratitude and so excited that I get to do what I love to do every day,” she says.”

The actress adds that in the 20th season, she will do something as Benson that she has never done before.

The first ever season of Law and Order aired in 1999.

As one of the longest-running scripted dramas, Law and Order SVU has seen a number of familiar faces over its twenty seasons.

A young Sarah Hyland, Hilary Duff, the late Robin Williams and Bradley Cooper are just some of the many popular actors and actresses to have had a short but sweet stint on the series.

Although the new season is yet to have an official air date here in Australia, we’ll be keeping our eyes peeled for the 20th milestone.
