We’re used to seeing him in the headlines for all the wrong reasons. But tennis star Bernard Tomic is on a mission to show the nation another side to him.

“There’s definitely a misconception out there about me,” Bernard tells TV WEEK, just days before he was dropped into the African jungle for I’m A Celebrity Get Me Out of Here Australia.

“Obviously I’ve said the wrong things at the wrong time throughout my career and I regret saying a lot of things in my life and doing a lot of things in my career but I’m sure that once people see me as a true person, an true individual and not a tennis star they will realise I’m a good guy.”

Bernard’s stint on I’m A Celebrity Get Me Out Of Here comes just weeks after the 25-year-old was slammed for boasting about his wealth after his Australian Open campaign came to an end.

“I’ve done a lot of bad things but I’m a better person in real life,” Bernard insists.

“I know I like to go speak a lot about money, but it’s not about the money. Yes, it’s stability for yourself and your family and future but at tough times when the media really get to you, I always just speak about money as sort of a defence. A shelter. But I know it’s not the right thing to do.”

So, what does Bernard hope to achieve by going on season four of the reality show?

“The public has never really seen me as an individual,” Bernard explains. “In this show, I can’t hide. I can’t hide from the camera’s so only then will people see who I really am and how I really act. I am a normal guy and I’m quite a cool guy.”
