Home and Away fans go wild over throwback picture of Emily Symons as Marilyn Chambers

With Home and Away ‘classic’ episodes now available to stream on 7Plus fans of the show are being treated to the soap in retro form.

And with these older episodes from the 80’s and 90’s, comes our favourite long-standing characters looking very different as they followed the fashion and beauty trends of those times.

What amazed fans the most was the difference in appearance between character Marilyn Chambers – portrayed by Emily Symons – in the 1989 version compared to now in 2022.

A screengrab of Marilyn when she first appeared on our screens in 1989 was posted to the Seven Facebook page and the comments are full of shell-shocked viewers of the soap.

The hair, the lips, the leopard coat, it all screams 80’s!

Marilyn’s styling really was a reflection of what trends we saw in the 80’s/90’s – from the thin eyebrows, the dark lips, the oversized earring and most importantly the volumised hair!

Whilst some commenters seemed to love the ‘old’ Marilyn, others seemed to find the get-up ‘cringy’.

“She looks much better now lol,” was one remark under the image.

“Did somebody lose their mop?” was another comment, with another saying: “I bet she cringes when looking back at those ‘do’s.”

Her vibrant clothes, flamboyant hair and ditsy nature are just some of the well-known character traits of Home And Away favourite Marilyn.

But the actress behind Marilyn, who has played the role on and off since 1989, admits she’s not all that similar to her beloved alter-ego.

“There are some similarities between Marilyn and I, but I’m not exactly like her,” explains Emily. “We both try to be happy, but she’s more over the top!”
