Fans of Australian medical drama Doctor Doctor have been eagerly awaiting news on when the beloved series would return.

The Nine Network confirmed the show had been renewed for a fourth season back in 2018, but as we approach the end of this year we’re still yet to see the gang back on our screens.

At the Nine Upfronts in Sydney on Wednesday, the network confirmed Australia’s favourite bad boy Dr Jugh Knight (Rodger Corser) and his family will return in 2020.

Nicole da Silva (Charlie), Ryan Johnson (Matt), Tina Bursill (Meryl), Hayley McElhinney (Penny), Matt Castley (Ajax), Chloe Bayliss (Hayley), Belinda Bromilow (Betty), Charles Wu (Ken) and Miranda Tapsell (April) are all set to return.

Joining the cast for series four are Dustin Clare (Glitch, Wolf Creek, Spartacus, Underbelly: A Tale of Two Cities), Kate Jenkinson (Wentworth, Offspring, Tangle) and Robyn Nevin (Top of the Lake, Upper Middle Bogan, Back in Very Small Business).

When last we left off, Hugh had just become a father, and his ex, Harriet, had fled town.

This derailed Hugh’s plans to move back to Sydney, which left him in an awkward spot with Penny, who had given him the ultimatum that they could only be together if he remained in Whyhope.

Nine gave fans a glimpse in to the upcoming season at the Upfronts.

“After serving out his probation in Whyhope and saving the family farm, Hugh faces the fight of his life – for love, career and family,” the network reveals. “Will Whyhope’s naughtiest doctor have the right stuff, or will he self-destruct and lose everything?”

Penny and Hugh will return for the fourth season.

In an interview with TV WEEK, Rodger revealed he is excited about the future of the show.

“There’s plenty more to do with these characters,” he says. “Hugh and Penny have done the love-triangle thing. I think that maybe that could shift over to a bit of Matt, Charlie and April.”

Rodger also says there could be some fun with having more than one baby in the Knight family.

“There has to be some great material there,” he laughs.

Hugh is excited for the future of Doctor Doctor.

We can’t wait to see what happens next for Hugh, the rest of the Knight family, and the residents of Whyhope when Doctor Doctor returns in 2020.
