“She’s dead, wrapped in plastic” (Season 1, episode 1)

It all begins when Pete Martell (Jack Nance) discovers the lifeless body of high-school prom queen Laura Palmer (Sheryl Lee) on a riverbank, wrapped in plastic. He calls the police and utters the immortal line above.

“Who’s the lady with the log?”

Laura’s schoolmate Ronette Pulaski (Phoebe Augustine) is found wandering dazed and bloodied across a bridge. Sheriff Harry Truman (Michael Ontkean) calls in FBI Special Agent Dale Cooper (Kyle MacLachlan). The Log Lady (Catherine E Coulson) reveals one day her log will have something to say to Agent Cooper. Meanwhile, Laura’s mother, Sarah (Grace Zabriskie), has a vision of Bob (Frank Silva) at the end of her bed.

“Let’s rock!”

Drifting into a deep sleep, Agent Cooper awakens in a room covered in zigzag flooring and red curtains. A finger-clicking dwarf in a red suit, known as “The Man From Another Place” (Michael J Anderson), is dancing. A girl who looks a lot like Laura sits next to him. The curious pair talk in backwards riddles as Laura whispers to Agent Cooper the identity of her killer.

Teen temptress Audrey Horne (Sherilyn Fenn) goes undercover at One Eyed Jacks, the brothel where Laura may have worked. She auditions with a cherry stalk and an impressively dexterous tongue, but is horrified to discover the owner − her father Benjamin (Richard Beymer) − likes to break in new girls.

Pete’s wife Catherine (Piper Laurie) gets caught up in an arson scheme with lover Benjamin Horne. She’s also in league with the owner of the soon-to-be-torched Packard Sawmill, Josie Packard (Joan Chen). The attack leaves Catherine missing feared dead, and waitress Shelly Johnson (Mädchen Amick) singed.

“What’s up, doc?”

“What’s up, doc?” (Season 1, episode 7)

Laura’s friends Donna Hayward (Lara Flynn Boyle), James Hurley (James Marshall) and her lookalike cousin Maddy Ferguson (Sheryl Lee), indulge in some amateur sleuthing. The result? Laura’s psychiatrist Dr Jacoby (Russ Tamblyn) has a heart attack after a patient’s call from beyond the grave. After some investigating, Agent Cooper is shot.

“It’s happening again”

“It’s happening again” (Season 2, episode 14)

While Agent Cooper is watching Julee Cruise singing at the Roadhouse, a mysterious giant visits him, announcing that it’s happening again. Possessed by the evil spirit of Bob, Laura’s father, Leland Palmer (Ray Wise), attacks and kills Maddy. Laura’s killer has been revealed.

“This is Windome Earle’s next move”

“This is Windome Earle’s next move” (Season 2, episode 20)

Agent Cooper’s ex-partner at the bureau bears a grudge. Windom Earle (Kenneth Welsh) has never forgiven him for having an affair with his wife. Earle was institutionalised after killing his wife, but has escaped and arrived in Twin Peaks. When a man’s body is discovered with a pawn chess piece in his mouth, Cooper knows he’s being challenged to a murderous game of chess.

Earle’s in town for more than revenge. He kidnaps and interrogates Major Garland Briggs (Don S Davis) to discover the location of the mysterious lodges. Briggs, who’s involved in top-secret government activities, had gone missing in the Douglas firs surrounding the town. Earle wants his secrets.

“How’s Annie?”

After the Miss Twin Peaks beauty pageant ends in chaos, Earle kidnaps Annie Blackburn (Heather Graham), the object of Agent Cooper’s affection, and takes her to the Black Lodge. In hot pursuit, Agent Cooper finds the portal into the Red Room and makes a deal with the devil, selling his soul to Bob to save Annie. He’s trapped in purgatory while his cackling doppelgänger runs loose.
