One of the most talked-about drama series of 2017, The Handmaid’s Tale, is about to return for a second season. Since last year, the multi-award-winning and critically acclaimed series has had viewers hooked.

If you’re yet to check it out, now is your chance before season two gets underway.

Sill need convincing? Here are five reasons you must watch this incredible series.

1. Elisabeth Moss

The Top Of The Lake star is no stranger to portraying strong women on screen. But Elisabeth Moss‘ role in The Handmaid’s Tale is on a completely different level.

In the series, the American actress plays Offred, a fertile woman forced into a life of servitude when an authoritarian regime takes over.

On the surface, her character must obey her new reality. But Elisabeth gives Offred a quiet defiance, and she lets rip whenever she’s given the chance to rebel.

There is little joy in Offred’s life as a handmaid.

2. The all-star cast

Elisabeth isn’t the only one to wow the audience.

Aussie Yvonne Strahovski stars as Serena Joy, a member of the elite who helped create the new ruling class. While Gilmore Girls star Alexis Bledel is heartbreaking as a member of the resistance, and Ann Dowd strikes fear in viewers as Aunt Lydia.

3. Offred’s story

What grabs you most is Offred’s journey in the scary, new world.

As you move through her harrowing story, you’ll cheer her on at every chance.

And as details emerge, you’ll realise nothing in her world is fair. What’s more, it’ll leave you hoping for the best and fearing the worst.

The Handmaids often suffer cruel and horrific punishments for stepping out of line.

4. The message

Based on Margaret Atwood’s 1985 novel, the series hit just as women campaigned for rights in Hollywood and society.

The story is all the more terrifying because the premise seems so possible. Watching it is like a warning of what could happen if women’s rights aren’t protected.

What happens to Ofglen (Alexis Bledel) is truly terrifying.

5. Shock and awe

Some of the scenes in The Handmaid’s Tale are disturbing.

From the handmaids’ duties to the tragic fate many of them face, it is truly shocking. At the same time, you won’t be able to look away.
