Kate Hudson once thought about ‘divorcing’ her very famous parents so she could land a film role.
Speaking at Newport Beach TV Fest over the weekend, the 46-year-old actress said she landed a small role in an unnamed project as a teenager but would have had to become emancipated from her parents to do it.
“I had gotten this part that they wanted me to basically divorce my parents so that I could work as an adult. My mum was like, ‘No, never happening,’ but then I got the Party of Five and it was so great,” she said during The Hollywood Reporter’s Awards Chatter podcast panel.
Instead, Kate landed a guest role on the second season of the 90s teen drama, Party of Five.
“I was 16 and obsessed with Party of Five, so walking onto that set was like, I couldn’t believe that I was going to have a guest role on it, a day player role,” she said. “I was like, oh. It was so fun.”

While Kate didn’t end up divorcing her parents, she has since become estranged from her father, musician and actor Bill Hudson.
Speaking on CBS Sunday Morning last year, Kate said she doesn’t really have a relationship with now 75-year-old Bill.
“But it’s — it’s warming up,” she explained. “There’s warming up with this all happening. But it’ll be whatever it will be, you know. I have — I have no expectation of that with my father, you know. I just want him to be happy.”
Appearing on The Howard Stern Show later in 2024, the How To Lose A Guy In 10 Days star said she’s “done so much work” to understand where her father is coming from.
“I know him enough to know, throughout the years, that whatever it is that he carries, whatever it is that makes him unable to have the capacity to be our dad doesn’t mean that he hasn’t loved us from afar or tried his best,” she said. “I wouldn’t be me if it wasn’t for my dad.”
Speaking to the Daily Mail last year, Bill said his relationship with his kids was “healing”.
“We are warming up [and] letting things take their course. All families have rifts. It’s nice that our rift is healing,” he told the publication. “There’s no pressure. We’re just letting it be what it will be. Because no one is pushing it, there’s no turmoil or issues.”

The Hudson Brothers member said he had no interest in “rehashing the past” with his children.
“A lot went down, and we aren’t revisiting it. No one wants to rehash the past,” he said. “You can’t move forward if all you’re doing is analysing the past. We’re in the present.”
After Kate’s mother Goldie Hawn divorced Bill in 1982, she began dating her long-term partner Kurt Russell, who raised Kate and her brother Oliver as his own.
“He has taught me that we can all exist with immense love through our differences,” Kate wrote on Instagram on Kurt’s 70th birthday. “He gave me the gift of confidence, instilling a knowingness in me that I deserved everything I worked for and I knew that he’d always have my back in whatever challenges may lay ahead.”
“When you have a dad who gives you permission to be confident, you live courageously,” she added.
