The Revenant and Mad Max: Fury Road lead Oscar nominations

With his film leading the nominations for this year’s Oscars, will Leonardo DiCaprio finally get a golden statuette from the Academy?

This year’s Oscar nominations have been announced and The Revenant is already a favourite with 12 nominations, including Best Picture, Best Actor and Best Director.
Australian Mad Max: Fury Road boss George Miller is up against The Revenant’s Alejandro Iñárritu for Best Director. The apocalyptic epic also has the highest amount of nominations for any Australian film.
Competing against these two films for Best Picture are The Big Short, Bridge of Spies, Brooklyn, The Martian, Room, Spotlight.
Aussie triumph! Director George Miller's Mad Max: Fury Road was filmed in Australia and stars Nicholas Hoult, Tom Hardy and Charlize Theron.
Six-time Oscar nominee Leonardo was thrilled to be recognised for his gruelling role in the revenge tale.
He said this morning, "I am so grateful to the Academy for their recognition of this film.”
He also thanked director Alejandro for “one of the most rewarding and collaborative experiences” of his life.
Other actors in the 41-year-old’s category include Bryan Cranston [Trumbo], Matt Damon [The Martian], Michael Fassbender [Steve Jobs], and Eddie Redmayne [The Danish Girl], who won Best Actor for his sensational portrayal of Stephen Hawking in 2015’s The Theory of Everything.
Will this be Leonardo's year, or will Eddie take home his second consecutive Oscar?
Cate Blanchett may also be taking home an Oscar for her role in the period piece Carol.
The 46-year-old actress is up against first-time nominees Brie Larson [Room] and Charlotte Rampling [45 Years], as well as Saoirse Ronan [Brooklyn] and Jennifer Lawrence [Joy].
This is Cate's seventh Oscar nomination.
Winners will be announced at the star-studded Oscars in Los Angeles on February 28.
