While he has been married twice before, Sean Penn says getting married again will be the first time he has has a marriage ‘on its own terms’.
The 54-year-old notoriously private actor, who was previously been married to Madonna and Robin Wright, opened up about his girlfriend Charlize Theron.
“Yes, I’d get married again…” he said during an interview with Esquire magazine.
“You say I’ve been married twice before but I’ve been married under circumstances where I was less informed than I am today, so I wouldn’t even consider it a third marriage, I’d consider it a first marriage on its own terms if I got married again.”
Sean says he and Charlize, 39, who are rumored to be engaged, have a relationship that is “a lot more romantic” then any other he has experience.
“I’m self-proclaimed bad at mathematics but I can do two plus two: 53 years old plus finally beginning to figure out why you haven’t been happy in a single relationship? It could seem too late,” he said.
“But to run into somebody now who you care about is a much more passionate, deeper, truer and – God! – a much happier feeling.
“It’s a lot more romantic and a lot more fulfilling to be in a relationship and to think you’re a good person within it.”
In 2014, Charlize told US Vogue that the pair who used to be friends didn’t see a relationship coming.
“I really didn’t see it coming. Sean and I have known each other for eighteen years. We were just really good friends. And it’s been slow going because you are aware that you could screw that up and lose it,” she said.
“We had to think about it. But at the end of the day, it was somewhat effortless. It just kind of naturally happened, and before I knew it, I was in something that was making my life better—the people who really love me can see the effect it has had on me.”
