Samuel Johnson has had more than his fair share of heartbreak in his life, including the losses of his sister, mother and girlfriend.

And though many would understand if the actor felt entitled to complain about the tragedies that have struck him in his 41 short years, Samuel always seems to have a positive outlook.

And this was the case on Wednesday, when the Dancing With The Stars winner shared a particularly poignant and inspirational post on his Instagram.

The photo featured Samuel with an anguished look on his face in the midst of a conversation with a woman.

He seemingly referenced the deaths of his loved ones as he captioned the shot: “Not the most flattering shot, but I see my world here. Listening to others who know exactly what it feels like.

“I look like I’m in pain, but the horrors motivate me to work harder, and I actually wouldn’t rather be anywhere else.”

Samuel is currently on a fundraising tour for his charity Love Your Sister as he attempts to raise $10million after making a promise to his late sister Connie.

The Secret Life of Us star and Connie worked tirelessly to raise money for the charity before she succumbed to breast cancer in September 2017, surrounded by family.

But sadly, Samuel’s tragic past doesn’t end there.

Appearing on Anh Do’s Brush With Fame, Samuel heartbreakingly revealed that his girlfriend Laine Woodlands committed suicide – as did his mother.

“I’d definitely say it’s probably my life’s biggest sadness. And in a way, the more time goes by, the more it hurts,” Samuel said of his anguish over Laine’s death.

“You know how they reckon that you come to terms with your grief as you go along? Not with this one.

“With every year it gets more profound. My sadness grows.”

The Logie-winner described her death as, “a great loss – one that I feel a lot more profoundly than the loss of my mother”.

Samuel was only three-years-old when he lost his mother.

“I was too young to really gauge the effects of it, but she had all kinds of psychosis, she was in and out of institutions,” he told the host.

“She was in and out of institutions — she tried over and over again … countless times.”
