Australia's most Googled celebrities 2014

Google has revealed the top trending Australian celebrities of 2014, and the ranks are bursting with the country’s brightest young things.

Featured BYTs on the list include Australia’s newest movie starlet Margot Robbie, Olympic medallist Torah Bright, our bright shining tennis star Nick Kyrgios and the inspiring Newcastle Knights star whose rugby league career was cut short by a spinal injury, Alex McKinnon.

It’s no surprise that biggest newsmaker of the year, Schapelle Corby, came in at most Googled. And Ian Thorpe‘s big year places him on the list as well.

The list features its share of prominent Australians who made headlines for notorious reasons, including Todd Carney and Rolf Harris.

But it’s great to see Aussie musicians making the cut, with Iggy Azalea coming in at third and Sia at eighth.

The most Googled Australian of 2014 was Schapelle Corby, who, at the start of the year, was set free at last, causing a media circus and ending a long saga.

The second most Googled Australian of 2014 was Todd Carney, who made headlines in 2014 after he was sacked by Cronulla Sharks over a picture showing him performing a lewd act at a urinal.

Iggy Azalea came in at number three. The controversial Aussie rapper has come a long way from her childhood in Mullumbimby, NSW, making it big in the US music scene.

Number 4 – It’s hard to believe our newest Aussie movie starlet, Margot Robbie only turned 24 this year. The actress and former Neighbours star landed her biggest role alongside Leonardo DiCaprio in The Wolf of Wall Street and now the Queensland-born beauty is filming several movies including Tarzan.

We couldn’t resist another photo of the gorgeous Margot. Look back on her best looks.

Number 5 – The sorry story of Rolf Harris hit rock bottom in 2014 with him being found guilty of indecent assault and sentenced to almost six years in prison.

Number 6 – Aussie snowboarder Torah Bright did Australia proud at the winter Olympics, winning Australia’s first medal.

Number 7 – Nick Kyrgios instantly became Aussie tennis’ next big hope after defeating number one seed Rafael Nadal at Wimbledon.

Number 8 – Brisbane singer-songwriter Sia had a terrific 2014, topping it off with four Grammy nominations including record of the year and song of the year for her internet sensation single Chandelier.

Number 9 – Ian Thorpe had a very big year with media reports that he was in and out of rehab and then coming out in a television interview with Michael Parkinson.

Number 10 – That terrible moment when Newcastle Knights star Alex McKinnon didn’t walk off the field soon became one of the most inspiring stories of the year.
