Magda Szubanski has asked Australia to “accept” the fact that she is fat and stop being shocked that she isn’t ashamed of it.

The 52-year-old comedienne appeared on the TODAY show this morning where she vowed not to let the paparazzi stop her from enjoying her life.

“I refuse to be ashamed,” she said. “I’m going to go to the beach, I’m going to live a normal life. I’m a big proponent of fat acceptance.

“I want to lose weight for health reasons but if I stay overweight I’m not going to feel terrible about myself. I think it’s very important that we take shame out of the equation because it helps no one.

“Do your worst paparazzi. I’m going to be there fat on the beach – whatever. It’s just life. It’s just me.”

Magda lost 36 kilograms on Jenny Craig in 2009, but the weight has crept back on in the past four years.

This week, she announced she had signed a new deal with the weight loss firm and is trying to slim down again for the sake of her health.

“For me, I’m never going to be skinny but it’s about getting back to a level where I can be fit and do the things that I want to do and feel healthier,” she said.

“I hope this is one that cracks it. Hopefully this time it will stick.”
