Luke entered the competition to renovate his humble home in Dalby, Queensland, with his twin brother Cody hoping to prove that two boys from the bush can win a design competition despite having no experience.
When they were announced as winners Luke couldn’t contain his emotions, barely able to speak as he thanked fellow grand finalists Claire and Hagan and his brother Cody through a flood of tears.
Cody joked that now he’ll get a lifetime of free rent and that when he buys a house, he’ll get Luke over to renovate it and only give him seven days.
The two teams became great friends through the competition with Claire and Hagan, who were hoping to win for their two girls Darcy and Matilda, saying the boys were deserving winners.
“We think the boys are amazing, they’ve done a great job and they’ve proved that throughout the competition,” Claire said. “They deserve it.”
Luke and Cody before the verdict
As their final challenge, both teams had four days to create outdoor entertaining areas in each others’ houses, so Claire and Hagan headed to Dalby while Luke and Cody went south to the Mornington Peninsula.
After judges Joe Snell and Wendy Moore revealed their scores, Claire and Hagan went into the public vote ahead scoring 19 out of 20 to the boys’ 17.
But having won over the nation with their down-to-earth attitudes and country charm, larrikins Luke and Cody came out on top.
In the final challenge, the twins, who headed into the grand final on the back of three wins, were tasked with bringing a beach feel into their zone while Claire and Hagan needed to bring the feel of the bush into theirs.
With all the eliminated teams – Rob and Rose, Nathan and Daniel, Brooke and Michelle and Fil and Joe – back for the live grand final, the judges’ scores were revealed.
Claire and Hagan
Wendy and Joe Snell assessed the beach box Luke and Cody built in Claire and Hagan’s tiny Mornington Peninsula backyard.
Joe was impressed with how they utilised such a small space, giving them an eight while Wendy loved the design and the coastal colours, scoring them nine.
In Dalby, Queensland they were very impressed with Claire and Hagan’s billabong-inspired handy work.
Joe thought their design was “magical” giving them a score of nine while Wendy said the spa was breathtaking and felt “everything came together flawlessly” giving them a score of 10.
But the judges’ score were just part of the equation with the public vote leaving Luke and Cody victorious.
