Capturing the nation’s attention in 2012 on singing show, The Voice Karise’s unique soulful vocal style went on to brake records for the most number of singles in the national sales chart – the first artist to achieve that since The Beatles in 1964.
But just a few months after more than 3 million people tuned in to watch the former ward of the state be crowned 2012’s The Voice-winner Karise’s national tour was cancelled after just four performances and the singer pretty much disappeared from the spotlight.
Australia was given an insight into the private life of Karise during an interview on ABC’s Australian Story, The Vanishing Act. The broadcast saw Karise candidly open up about her turbulent past and what happened after her talent show victory.
“I just lost myself and I didn’t know who I was expected to be,” Karise told the ABC.
Eden talked about how the post-show pressure grew to be too much for her to handle.
“So basically I hit rock bottom and I had a breakdown.”
But two years later Karise is back on the scene with her “comeback” album and can now include a Top 5 album debut to her list of musical achievements.
Karise wrote or co-wrote all but one of the 12 tracks on the album working alongside producers and songwriters of the highest calibre.
The 22-year-old couldn’t hold her excitement back about her sophomore album, featuring lead single Dynamite, and talks about the making of the record in this exclusive track by track video where she discusses the inspiration for each song.
Watching the video one gets a sense that the album has been somewhat of a cathartic experience for Karise who has seemingly poured all of the triumphs and tribulations of the past into the lyrics.
That raw emotion is particularly present in the first song on the record, Black Heart.
“It was quite an emotional and present sorrow for me to carry at that time, because it was a fresh wound for me,” says Karise of the tune.
“It just feels good to get it out on paper you know, I guess you kind of lay them [sic] feelings to rest.”
The NSW Central Coast native praises the fans of her music that have stuck by her.
“I’m stoked by how many of you went out and bought my new album,” the 22-year-old told The Weekly in a statement.
“Never would’ve thought I’d crack the Top 5 first week but here we are, thank you!”
The singer is hoping for a fresh start to life with a new house, a new partner, a baby son on the way in December and exciting plans for a 23 Day National Tour next year.
“Singing live is what I love to do most and I can’t wait to get out there and share this new album with everyone on my upcoming tour.”
