According to TMZ Cathriona was found unresponsive in her Sherman Oaks, California home by two friends along with what appears to be a suicide note – she was pronounced dead at the scene.
The website also revealed that the 28-year-old’s passing comes just days after her and Jim called time on their relationship.
In a statement to US Weekly the 53-year-old actor revealed, “I am shocked and deeply saddened by the passing of my sweet Cathriona.”
“She was a truly kind and delicate Irish flower, too sensitive for this soil, to whom loving and being loved was all that sparkled,” he added.
“My heart goes out to her family and friends and to everyone who loved and cared about her. We have all been hit with a lightning bolt.”
Jim and Cathriona were said to have an on-again-off-again relationship.
Cathriona, an Irish born make-up artist, met Jim on the set of a film in 2012 where they seemed to have an on-again-off-again relationship in the years to come, before they officially called it quits this week on September 24.
Chillingly, the stunning brunette wrote in her final tweet on the day of her breakup, “Signing off Twitter, I hope I have been a light to my nearest and dearest.”
Authorities revealed to TMZ that they believe Cathriona died of a drug overdose. Reportedly, pills were found next to her along with the suicide note addressed to Jim Carrey.
