Gwyneth Paltrow is often known to rub people up the wrong way (who could forget the now-classic phrase, “Conscious Uncoupling”?), and it seems that even her closest family aren’t immune to irritation around the actress.

In a new interview with Harper’s Bazaar’s ‘Daring’ November issue, the actress admitted that her own dad once called her out over her ego.

“I remember when I was maybe 27 years old and kind of at the height of my movie stardom – it was around the time of the Oscar and this and that. I think I was very much believing my own hype, which how could you not?” Gwynie recalled of the buzz after she landed a coveted Oscar for Shakespeare in Love.

“I was sitting with my dad, feeling great about my life and everything that was happening, and he was like, ‘You know, you’re getting a little weird… You’re kind of an asshole.'”

“And I was like, ‘What the hell?’ I was totally devastated. But it turned out to be basically the best thing that ever happened to me,” she added.

She went on to describe how her late father’s comments made her reassess her life and gave her the ultimate reality check.

Sadly, Bruce Paltrow passed away from complications of oral cancer and pneumonia in October 2002.

At the time, Gwyneth’s then-husband, Coldplay frontman Chris Martin, penned his 2005 hit Fix You as a tribute to his shattered partner.

In the past, the 44-year-old has cited Chris’ music as therapeutic.

“He wrote this song before I met him, and I think another reason it’s sad for me is my father had just died when this album came out, and we used to listen to it kind of on repeat… especially this song at the end,” she once explained of his song Everything’s Not Lost.

She and ex-husband Chris have two children together, Apple, 12 and Moses, 10. Despite their divorce, the couple continue to co-parent their kids and continue to have a close relationship.

In her latest chat, Gwyneth also admitted she worries about raising children who have two famous parents.

“In my case, I’ve borne these two kids into a particularly strange circumstance. They are going to have to fend off a lot and protect themselves from a lot of projections and prejudice about who they are, coming from the family that they come from.”

“My daughter is super ballsy. I always follow her lead. I actually don’t need to encourage her to take risks. She likes to push herself; she wants to see how far she can get. It’s really inspiring to see that in a young woman.”
