It was meant to be a relaxing family holiday for one of Australia’s favourite TV stars, but Grant Denyer’s family vacation in Japan took a turn for the worse last week as news broke that his show Celebrity Name Game has been bumped in a move that many see as signalling its end.

It’s yet another blow for the 42-year-old TV veteran, who amid a slew of troubling health problems, was also sacked from his 2Day FM radio gig in August.

Last week Ten released a statement that Grant’s show would move from the main channel to 10 Bold after relentlessly low ratings.

Poor ratings

Since its launch in May, the game show has failed to strike a chord with viewers and has consistently rated lower than its predecessors Pointless and Family Feud, which Grant also hosted and got canned in May 2018 because of dismal ratings.

It comes at a low point for the much-loved TV star who has had a run of bad luck with his 2Day FM breakfast show which he hosted alongside Ed Kavalee and Ash London, also axed because of poor ratings.

The program plummeted to an abysmal 2.4 per cent audience share, down 3.1 per cent in the previous ratings year. Adding insult to injury, Grant’s show was revealed to be a historic low for 2Day FM after it became the worst-rated program since March 2015.

On top of professional woes, Grant’s 2019 has been plagued with a myriad of personal issues.

In July, shock images emerged of the former race car driver looking ill at Sydney airport, with him appearing to collapse on a couch before boarding a flight.

Prior to that, the TV WEEK Gold Logie winner was hospitalised after rupturing a disc in an accident on the family’s Bathurst property.

Meanwhile in April, his eight-year-old daughter Sailor broke her wrist, and in July the couple’s other daughter, Scout, three, had her tonsils removed.

Then Grant and Chezzi were bedridden after contracting a parasite on a holiday to Bali.

In the drought

On top of health and work issues, the family have also been plagued by drought at their farm.

“I fed my cows the last of our hay stores today,” Chezzi wrote on Instagram.

“It’s hard to get, but I’ve got some on order. Tomorrow we will move them to another property.

“It’s heartbreaking seeing the mum cows so hungry while feeding their babies. So tonight I’ve chopped up apples, carrots, asparagus, lettuce and bread.

“My heart goes out to anyone in drought with stock they love. These are our pets. This big dry is just so unrelenting.”

While the couple have been doing it tough lately, one thing’s for sure – they’ve still got each other to lean on.

“Healthy, happy and deliriously in love. Still. How amazing is that – after nearly 10 years married!” Chezzi also shared recently.
