Goldie Hawn’s intriguing reason she and Kurt Russell have lasted

The couple have been together for 33 years, but have never tied the knot - and that's the key, she says.

Sometimes it seems as though no Hollywood couple is immune to the break-up curse (Brangelina is still a sore point), so we can’t help but be fascinated with Goldie Hawn and Kurt Russell’s relationship, which is seemingly still going strong after an incredible 33 years. In an age when even the strongest seeming Hollywood relationships aren’t surviving, why is theirs still going the distance?

Well, according to Goldie it’s simple: it’s all about marriage, or to be more precise, the lack of it. Speaking on Britain’s Loose Women TV show, the actress said she’s glad she never tied the knot, she said: “I would have been long divorced if I got married.”

“Marriage is an interesting psychological thing. If you need to be bound to someone, then it’s important to be married. If you have independence, if you have enough money and sense of independence and you like your independence, there’s something psychological about not being married because it gives you the freedom to make decisions one way or the other.

“For me, I chose to stay, Kurt chose to stay, and we like the choice.” Goldie and Kurt have a son, Wyatt, 30, together.

Of course, the 70 year-old actress is used to being asked about her relationship, but her choice not to get married may stem from the fact that she’s been divorced twice before.

She married Gus Trikonis in 1969, before divorcing him and tying the knot with Bill Hudson (with whom she has two children, Kate and Oliver), in 1976.

However, she has continuously stressed over the years that independence is a key part of any relationship for her, telling Porter magazine in a 2015 interview: “Intention is the key. It’s also about not losing yourself in each other. Being together, two pillars holding up the house and the roof, and being different, not having to agree on everything, learning how to deal with not agreeing. Everything’s a choice.”
