With a successful career in both TV and radio, Erin Molan has faced more online criticism and trolling than most.

That’s why the mother-of-one has been petitioning for months to have new legislation passed that will protect victims and make offenders responsible for their actions.

And yesterday, the online safety bill was officially passed through government.

“The Australian Parliament has just passed the Online Safety Bill 🙏,” Erin announced in an Instagram post.

“This new legislation will ensure the laws that exist in real life will now exist online. It will help keep our children safer – and every Australian adult 🙏 It will help hold perpetrators to account – remove their anonymity and create genuine real life deterrents.

“It will force big social media companies to act 🙏 It will NOT infringe on free speech in any way, shape or form – the threshold for abuse/threats/harmful content is aligned to the criminal code.”

Not long after, her co-stars and team at the Hughesy, Ed and Erin show celebrated the news making their own announcement on the show’s official page and showering Erin in flowers.

“An appreciation post for Erin Molan, who had a huge win with the online safety legislation passing in parliament. Proud is an understatement ❤️,” it read.

Speaking to TV WEEK late last year the former NRL Footy Show host revealed how viscously she was trolled working on the show, one trolling even threatening the life of her unborn baby in 2018.

Erin credited her dad, army major-general-turned-Liberal senator Jim Molan, with helping her stay strong.

“I’ve got a great support network – my dad’s incredibly tough and resilient and has been to war – so I’ve got great perspective,” she explains.

She went on to reveal she’s never considered walking away from her media career because of cyber-bullying.

“Me walking away lets the tiny minority of people who do this win, and that’s never been my style and never will be.

“I’ll walk away when I want to, not when someone suggests to me via a threatening message on Instagram that I should.”
