Actress Emma Watson has delivered an impressive speech in New York as part of her role as UN Women Goodwill ambassador.

The Harry Potter star spoke for the launch of a new UN campaign called “HeForShe”, which aims to gather the support of men to help end gender inequality.

“I was appointed six months ago and the more I have spoken about feminism the more I have realised that fighting for women’s rights has too often become synonymous with man-hating,” she said. “If there is one thing I know for certain, it is that this has to stop.

“For the record, feminism by definition is: ‘The belief that men and women should have equal rights and opportunities. It is the theory of the political, economic and social equality of the sexes.'”

Watson, who is only 24, also revealed she had experienced sexism during school.

She said she was called “bossy” when she wanted to direct school plays, but her male classmates didn’t face the same criticism.
