These days they’re a laid-back Aussie golden couple, but when Edwina Bartholomew met her now-husband, fellow journalist Neil Varcoe, he initially turned her down.
The two first crossed paths over a decade ago when they worked together at the radio station 2GB and Neil caught Edwina’s eye.
During a conversation with OK! Magazine in 2017, the mother-of-two and Sunrise host revealed Neil turned down a first date with her, although he claims it was all a misunderstanding.
“I asked him out on a date, and he said no, which he maintains was a miscommunication,” Edwina recalled.
“I thought, ‘Well, you’re a bloody idiot, aren’t you? A girl asks you out for a drink and you say no?’
“Anyway, we eventually did go out on a date, and we’ve been together ever since. I literally went home that night after that date and said: ‘I’m going to marry him’.”
After six years of dating, Neil, a Country Lead in Editorial Curation for Twitter, popped the question at their Warramba property in the beautiful Blue Mountains.

“We went for a walk up our drive at the farm. He’s not a down on one knee-type guy. He’d spoken to my dad – he did it the traditional way. I had invited my sister up for the weekend, and he was planning to propose, so he had to wait.
“He actually tried to propose a number of times before, but I would have something on that got in the way,” Edwina recounted to OK!.
“He had the ring. He had it made in consultation with my best friend. He actually had the engagement and wedding ring. It was quite funny as he dropped it on the ground as he proposed.
“I’m elated – deliriously happy. Thrilled and excited. I do feel a bit different. You suddenly switch to ‘Wow, this is it’. How wonderful,” she added.
They finally tied the knot in April 2018, but chose to skip a flashy city venue for something closer to home.
At their beloved Warramba property, they said ‘yes to forever’ in front of 160 guests, and Edwina wore a vintage dress that was handed down from three generations of her family.
In 2019 their world grew when they welcomed their daughter Molly, and they completed their sweet family when Thomas arrived in March 2022.
However, as sentimental as Edwina and Neil are they love nothing more than making fun of each other.

In 2013 Edwina accompanied her then-boyfriend to his university graduation and showed off the cheeky side of her personality Neil fell in love with.

The pair travelled through Europe together in 2014, sparking rumours of an upcoming engagement.

In 2016 the couple bought their farm in Warramba together, Neil reflecting in 2018: “Two years ago we made a wild decision to buy @warramba. It’s the hardest and the greatest thing we’ve done.”
And puppy makes three! The pair adopted this adorable little mate together in 2017.

“Celebrating five magical years with this one, today. She has my heart. She is my everything,” Neil gushed at the half-decade mark.

As the years went by, Neil and Edwina couldn’t have looked more smitten – but everyone wanted to know when he’d put a ring on it.
It finally happened in 2018, when Neil popped the question at their beautiful Warramba property and Edwina said yes.
After all, who could say no to a ring like that!
The couple began wedding planning and took some inspiration from other nuptials they attended, like this one.

For Neil’s second Father’s Day, Edwina shared this snap with the caption: “Thank you for all the wonderful Neil-y things that you have passed onto Molly like her compulsive need to clean up ‘ess’ and her love of cows, trucks and ‘bee-bee-bee’ (honey).”
The family of three couldn’t wait to grow again, and Molly was excited to become a big sister.
The couple made the most of their last Christmas before their second child arrived.
Neil and Edwina welcomed their son Thomas in early 2022 and couldn’t have been more happy to become parents for a second time.
