Emma Thompson on the hilarious moment she turned down Donald Trump

First Lady Emma Thompson?

Emma Thompson, who has appeared in the likes of Sense and Sensibility and Love Actually, has surprised the host of a Swedish talk show with a hilarious story involving herself, President Donald Trump and a VERY awkward phone call.

“He asked me out once,” Thompson told host Fredrik Skavlan while appearing on Swedish news outlet SVT on Thursday. “I’ll tell you the story, it’s very funny.”

The surreal exchange took place as she was shooting the 1998 film Primary Colours in Los Angeles, a political film that was loosely based on Bill Clinton’s 1992 presidential campaign.

The 57-year-old actress recalls: “I was in my trailer and it was on the Universal lot. … So the phone rings in my trailer, which it’s never done before. … I lift up the phone: ‘Hi. It’s Donald Trump here.’ I said, ‘Really? What? Can I help you?’ ”

“He said, Yeah, I just you know, I wondered if I could offer you some accommodation in one of my Trump Towers. They’re really comfortable.”

“I think we would get on very well. Maybe we could have dinner sometime?'”

She continued: “I didn’t know what to do with myself. I was absolutely… I was on my own, and I just said, ‘Okay, well I’ll get back to you! Thank you so much for ringing’.”

Having a laugh with the talk show hosts, Emma added, “I wish I had [accepted] ― think of the stories!”

Indeed…

Two thumps up for effort!

Emma separated from her first-husband Kenneth Branagh in 1995 and welcomed a daughter, Gaia, in 1999 with her Sense & Sensibility costar Greg Wise. The duo wed in 2003.

Greg has previously opened up about the couple’s failed attempts to conceive through IVF and how “upsetting” the process was.

Speaking to the Daily Mail magazine back in 2014, he said that following the birth of their daughter, who was conceived thanks to IVF, the couple tried for second child.

“We tried IVF a few times after having her and it didn’t work,” he said.

“IVF is very upsetting. It’s a brutal process and it’s very emotional. It’s really hard. But then you pick yourself up, look around and see this unbelievably beautiful little baby you’ve got anyway.”

In 2003, Greg and Emma met Tindyebwa Agaba, a former child soldier from Rwanda. Tindyebwa was homeless and began spending more and more time with the family before they eventually adopted him.

“He’s a remarkable boy,” Greg told the Mail of his son.

“He’s had more misery than hopefully any of us will have to put up with. That’s given him an incredible drive for trying to make people’s lives better.”

What a wonderful couple!
