David Beckham has started his epic journey across the world, where he plans to play seven football matches on seven continents.
The football superstar is travelling from a mountain village in Asia all the way down to Antarctica and is documenting the experience on social media with the hashtag #LoveOfTheGame as he raises awareness for UNICEF.
“I remember sitting on a plane and discussing this idea with friends and never thinking it would become a reality,” he said.
“I’m genuinely excited now we can realise this ambitious idea.”
The first stop for the 40-year-old was in Papua New Guinea where he made a ball out of banana leaves.
From there, he will travel to Nepal before facing teams in Buenos Aires in South America, Djibouti on the Horn of Africa, Miami in North America and frozen Antarctica.
He’ll finish up the tour, which is being recorded by BBC cameras for a 90-minute documentary, at his former home, Old Trafford where be played for many years with Manchester United.
David came up with the idea as a way of celebrating 10 years as a UNICEF Goodwill Ambassador with “seven” being both the name of his charity foundation and the number he played with as a footballer.
“Whether as a player or out in the field for UNICEF and other charitable partners, I have seen the transformational effect that sport and in particular football has on people’s lives.”
