In an interview with S magazine in the Sunday Express newspaper, Daniel Radcliffe, perhaps still better known as Harry Potter, said that two days before filming started on his rom-com, What If?, the producers asked him to lose his Canadian twang.
“It was basically, ‘You’re not marketable without your English accent,’ which is bad news for all the other stuff I’ve done with American accents,” the now New York based Radcliffe told the magazine,
“‘It was one of those ridiculous last-minute panics on their behalf, but I certainly wasn’t going to go, ‘Well, screw you guys, I’m going to put 200 people out of work for the sake of an accent.'”
However 25 year-old Radcliffe certainly isn’t a diva about the whole thing. He remains, as S magazine puts it, more “jobbing actor” than spoilt brat, despite being in possession of an approximate £60 million fortune.
However Radcliffe is quick to acknowledge that he now has the luxury of choices when it comes to taking on roles. For Radcliffe, who went from Harry Potter to appearing nude on Broadway, playing beat poet Alan Ginsberg and will next appear as Igor in a Frankenstein re-make, this is important.
He credits his literary agent father and casting agent mother for his savvy when it comes to picking good parts.
“I’m very lucky because I have good instincts,” Daniel told S,
“Most of what my mum did was intense political stuff on TV and my dad’s whole job as a literary agent was to find new writers and playwrights. I’d like to think that I’ve inherited some of their tastes and instincts.”
Even if he has to keep his, as he puts it, ‘bit posh’ accent, we can expect to see more plenty more of Radcliffe.
