Earlier this year, Carrie Bickmore’s Logies acceptance speech went viral after The Project host used her moment to shine the spotlight on brain cancer.
She opened up to the crowd, telling them how her husband had passed away from cancer in 2010 and donned a beanie to bring awareness to the “Beanies for Brain Cancer” campaign.
She’s since become a figurehead for the cancer and, on Monday evening on The Project, she announced that she would be doing more than just raising awareness, launching a new foundation to raise crucial funds for research into treatment options for sufferers of the illness.
“While I feel like I’ve done a lot of talking about it, actions speak louder than words,” she said.
“That’s why I’m launching a new foundation: Carrie’s Beanies for Brain Cancer.”
The foundation will be hosting the Brainbeats concert, which will see global superstars Ed Sheeran and Rudimental joined by a stellar Aussie cast including Vance Joy and Bliss N Edo in a massive concert at Margaret Court Arena in Melbourne on December 6.
Carrie’s aim is to raise $1 million for researchers as she explained the survival rates for brain cancer have not improved in three decades.
One Australian is diagnosed with the disease every five house and one dies every seven.
“It receives less than 5 per cent of all government cancer research funding. That’s not good enough.”
