The former actress, singer and dancer died at her home in Winston-Salem, North Carolina, on Wednesday.

In a statement her son Guy B Johnson said, “Her family is extremely grateful that her ascension was not belaboured by a loss of acuity or comprehension.

“She lived a life as a teacher, activist, artist and human being. She was a warrior for equality, tolerance and peace. The family is appreciative of the time we had with her and we know that she is looking down upon us with love.”

Famous fans from all over the world have taken to social media to remember the civil-rights activist best known for her 1969 memoir I Know Why The Caged Bird Sings.

“I’ve been blessed to have Maya Angelou as my mentor, mother/sister and friend since my 20s. She was there for me always, guiding me through some of the most important years of my life,” long-time friend Oprah posted on Instagram.

“Rest in peace phenomenal woman,” Beyonce shared with a handwritten note.
