Anthony Callea’s new album Forty Love debuted at number five on the ARIA Charts last month – and the Aussie singer is over the moon.

“I’ve been very lucky, you know, 18 years and I’m still able to wake up every day and call myself a singer and release music,” says the 40-year-old, who shot to fame on Australian Idol in 2004.

A lot of his fans, Anthony says, have stuck by him since his Idol days. “When they come to the shows, they come to multiple shows and I know their names,” he tells.

Speaking of names, Anthony and his husband, actor Tim Campbell, may need to come up with some of their own soon!

“If my mum had her way, she would want us to have children yesterday,” Anthony laughs, telling Woman’s Day the couple, who are celebrating their eighth wedding anniversary this month, have been talking about starting a family for years.

“I love being an uncle. I did say to Tim, ‘Would you be interested in going down the road of having kids?’ Then when your siblings start having kids and you see what goes on, I’m like, ‘Maybe I’ll just hold off a second. I might just wait and see how this pans out for them,'” jokes the star, who says the couple “never say never” when it comes to getting on board the baby train.

Anthony’s album was no.5 on the ARIA charts.

One thing stopping them for now is their ability to travel at the drop of a hat.

“If we see a gap in our schedule, and so forth, we just pack our bags and go,” says the singer, who’s heading overseas to ring in his 40th birthday in December.

“I can’t wait,” says Anthony, who admits he is “grateful” to be where he is in life at 40. “In my younger years, a lot of the time I was always thinking of pleasing everyone else. And I’m in this headspace now where I’m making choices that make me happy.”

One that brought the biggest smiles was flopping down on the Celebrity Gogglebox couch with Tim, 47, earlier this year. “It’s fun, it’s lighthearted and, especially in this day and age, it’s exactly what we need,” says Anthony, who reveals they’ll be back “if it works from a scheduling perspective”.

However, he isn’t so sure about appearing on the upcoming Idol reboot.

“There were conversations in the early days. [But] I’m really happy with where I’m at,” says Anthony, before questioning the inclusion of US stars Meghan Trainor and Harry Connick Jr.

“Do we need to have internationals on a judging panel for an Australian show? It’s called Australian Idol – that’s what I loved about the essence of the original format.”
