AFL tough man Nathan Brown has opened up about the guilt he feels when he leaves his children at home to go to work.

The former Richmond Tiger and AFL Footy Show host has told the current issue of The Australian Women’s Weekly magazine of the “father guilt” faced by many modern dads as they juggle the traditional responsibility of breadwinning with the relatively modern expectation they will also be equal contributors to the child rearing.

“In my dad’s era the father was on hand for sporting activities and discipline,” says the Melbourne-based father of Ava, 5, Helena, 3 and Jude, 8 months.

“These days, I feel enormous guilt when I am leaving home for work and my daughter bursts into tears because she wants me to stay at home. It’s heartbreaking, but you tell yourself you’re building a better life for them.”
