Burn survivor’s empowering makeup tutorial

I love myself for who I am and I'm accepting of what has happened to me...

Beauty blogger Shalom Nchom AKA Shalom Blac has released an inspiring video highlighting the real meaning of beauty.

The 20-year-old vlogger who was burned in a childhood cooking accident in her native home Nigeria has shown how she does a remarkable job of using makeup to cover up her facial scars. But it was her positive body image message which has caught the attention of her fans.

In the inspiring video, titled ‘The Power of Makeup’, Shalom emphasises that she isn’t happy because makeup makes her happy, she’s happy because she loves herself.

“You should love yourself either way, make-up or no make-up,” she explained in the six-minute clip. “You should be able to love yourself.”

Shalom spoke candidly about living with the scars on her head and face, and what affects they have had on her body image.

“I remember when I was in middle school, because of my scars, I used to wear makeup. I actually didn’t use foundation – I used concealer all over my face so that it was caked on, just to try and consume my scars,” she reminisced. “But even with that much make-up I still wasn’t happy. So makeup should not make you happy. You know, it’s something that you should just love doing. And at the time, I thought it was going to work but it did not work.”

Shalom says she’s been on a long journey to get to a positive place in her life and she’s no longer willing to entertain her own negative thoughts, or anyone else’s.

“I love myself for who I am and I’m accepting of what had happened to me and I’m just going to live with that. I really don’t care if anyone has something negative to say about that.”
