The five best beauty lessons we learned from our mums

Mum’s the word.

By AWW + Clarins
When it comes to life lessons, we can always count on our mums to come through with the goods.
Whether it's advice on how to handle a rocky relationship, words of wisdom we can apply to our careers, or beauty lessons that stay with us throughout the years, there's no denying mum's word is sometimes the best.
Here is some of the best beauty tips we learned straight from the mouth of mum.

1. Cleanse before bed

It's the number one rule when it comes to makeup, and it's one that's often been taught to us from the very beginning.
"Mum always said to remove my makeup before bed. Always. No matter how tired I might be," Melissa, 36, said.
Not only can we avoid waking up with those panda-like eyes and stained pillowcases but removing makeup and properly cleansing before bed ensures our skin is able to breathe and renew itself as we rest. After all, it is called 'beauty sleep' for a reason.

2. It’s never too early to fight the signs of ageing

"For me, I was taught that the secret to healthy and youthful skin, is starting a proper routine young," Kayla, 27, said.
"Along with a healthy lifestyle, adding in one or two key anti-ageing products means things don't have to be complicated. Mum always said a high-quality moisturiser or treatment can be more beneficial than using multiple serums and oils at once."
Clarins Multi-Active Day Cream is ideal for those first fine lines and signs of fatigue, and is powered by plant extracts to restore radiance, hydrate, and maintain younger-looking skin.
Its hero ingredient, organic Teasel extract, delivers targeted revitalising and anti-ageing action to where your skin needs it the most, preserving naturally radiant appearance.

3. Always wear sunscreen

Prevention is key, but so is protection.
"Mum never let us leave the house without sunscreen, and it's now such a vital step in my everyday beauty routine," said 40-year-old Grace.
Choose a sunscreen that offers broad-spectrum protection (that protects against both UVA and UVB rays) with an SPF of at least 30 and be sure re-apply at least every two hours. Sunscreen should be the last product after your skincare and applied before your foundation and make-up.
Not only does regular daily use of sunscreen reduce the risk of developing some skin cancers, but it helps prevent the signs of premature ageing – like fine lines, wrinkles, and blemishes – caused by the sun.

4. Don’t forget to moisturise

There are three words 64-year-old Sue will never forget her mother saying: "moisturise, moisturise, moisturise".
"Mum always had her favourite products, but she never, ever forgot the moisturiser, and it's been an important part of my routine for as long as I can remember."

The needs of our skin change as we grow older, so use a product targeted to your skin concerns at every age for the best results.
Clarins new Nutri-Lumiére Revive enhances skin tone, revitalises and firms, and is perfect for those whose skin might be lacking in radiance and suppleness as a result of hormonal changes during or after menopause.
With the action of eight organic plant extracts, including anti-ageing superfruit Kaki, the formula helps to immediately reflect light from the inside for an overall radiance boost, with illuminating pearls and violet-tinted texture correcting the colour yellow, helping to transform a 'sallow' complexion and restore luminosity.

5. Don’t neglect your hands

Other parts of our bodies - like our hands - sometimes need some extra care, too. (Image: Clarins)
It's not just our faces that need a little extra TLC – 31-year-old Mia's mother always stressed the importance of taking care of other parts of her body too.
"Mum always had perfectly manicured nails, but she also had the softest hands," she said.
"Properly looking after my hands has become even more important now that we're using harsh sanitisers and washing them more often."
Using a cream with intensely hydrating and protecting ingredients, like hyaluronic acid, niacinamide, glycerin and goat milk will ensure your hands stay silky smooth all year round.
