EXCLUSIVE: For MasterChef Australia runner-up Ben Borsht, there's baby joy ahead

'It's time to start a family!'

MasterChef Australia 2018 runner-up Ben Borsht has babies on the brain. And now that the gruelling seven-month shoot is over, kids could be on the way for the amateur cook and his new wife, Caitlyn.

"We definitely do want to have kids," Ben, 31, says. "That's very much on our list of things to do."

Ben married Caitlyn in July after five years together.

"I suppose we just want to make sure we get the timing right," he continues.

Ben says while it was difficult being away from his bride for all those months so soon after marrying, he feels incredibly lucky that Caitlyn, 30, was so reassuring.

"I couldn't have asked for anything better when it came to her supporting me," he says.

"She was lonely at times, but was happy to let me go. That was amazing."

The likeable Queensland builder came in second to Sashi Cheliah in the MasterChef Australia grand finale, which aired on Network Ten overnight.

Despite losing out to Sashi, Ben says it [winning MasterChef] couldn't have happened to a nicer person.

"I was elated just to be standing next to Sashi, and I was so happy for him," he says.

"He really deserved it and he worked his butt off for it, and his family are beautiful and I couldn't imagine it happening to a better guy.

Ben and Sashi competed in two rounds in the grand finale, one a 90-minute challenge, the other a five-and-a-half hour pressure test with esteemed chef Heston Blumenthal.

Ben says he was excited to recreate Heston's dish, calling it "mind-boggling."

"I was pretty excited. I loved the pressure tests and thrived in that situation, but it was pretty mind boggling what he had on the plate. It was just bizarre, but fantastic!"

The runner-up says he's thrilled he decided to enter the competition, calling the show the "best job I've ever had."

Ben launched his new website – benborsht.com.au – earlier today, and hopes to continue working in the food industry after the competition.
