Shailene Woodley hints at ‘dark’ second season of Big Little Lies

“It doesn’t shy away from the dirty”

It's on the top of our to-watch list for 2019.

Now Shailene Woodley, who plays single mother Jane Chapman in Big Little Lies, has revealed what we can expect in the upcoming second season.

Speaking to the The Hollywood Reporter at The 2018 Deauville American Film Festival earlier this week, the actress said the show will dig into even deeper territory with its narratives.

"My character has a very different story line which is wonderful, but for many other people it goes deep," she reveals.

"It's going to be very emotional but at the same time still be comedic and have those light moments, but it doesn't shy away from the dirty."

Shailene stated that viewers now have more of a desire to understand and explore female psychology from a cinematic point of view.

She also commented on the success of the series' first season, and why the show resonates so well with its audiences.

"The drama was rooted in many truths that we shy away from in America," the actress says.

"Domestic abuse is not often something that is explored because it's too real and too common and it's easier to keep it quiet than to go too deep into it."

Although many of the details surrounding Big Little Lies season two have been tightly kept, we can expect the series to be back on our screens mid next year.

The original star studded cast is set to return, including Reese Witherspoon (Madeline), Nicole Kidman (Celeste), Laura Dern (Renata) and Zoe Kravitz (Bonnie).

Perhaps an even bigger name to make their debut on the series' return is Meryl Streep, who will be playing mother-in-law to Nicole Kidman's character.

It has been rumoured that Alexander Skarsgard may also be back on the scene in more than just flashback's, despite his character Perry dying (or so we think) after being pushed down a set of stairs in last season's finale.

A shock twist revival? Who knows, but we can't wait to find out!
