Another day, another awful example of how a routine vaccination could’ve prevented harm against a sweet, young child.
According to KidSpot, a five-week-old boy from New South Wales’ north is in a very serious condition after enduring a brain haemorrhage following his parents’ choice not to allow him a routine vitamin K shot.
As reported by The Daily Telegraph, last week, the youngster was admitted to a hospital in Lismore with bleeding on the brain; he has since been moved to Brisbane’s Lady Cliento Children’s Hospital in Brisbane and is in a very serious condition.
This brain haemorrhage is a result of low levels of vitamin K – something all children are said to be born with. This, in turn, can develop into Newborn Haemorrhagic Disease – a deadly, but preventable condition.
KidSpot state that up until vitamin K vaccinations were made compulsory in the 1970s, as many as 15 babies in New South Wales would die from this deficiency.
Now, with the vaccinations, the rate has dropped to zero.
It is cases like this that have prompted Prime Minister Malcolm Turnbull and the federal government to push for banning unvaccinated children from childcare centres across the country.
“It matters because it’s protecting children and against mumps and measles and shingles and hooping cough and conditions that can lead to agony or, as we see, real tragedies,” Federal Health Minister Greg Hunt told Channel Nine of the March 2017 decision.
“It’s our duty as a government to try to protect every child, and there should be no barrier to any parent adopting this measure … if we don’t do this we put innocent children, beautiful children, at risk.”
