New mum uses breast pump while running half marathon

Breastfeeding and motherhood does not limit what I am capable of, it only enhances it.

Not only is Anna Young running 21km five months after giving birth, the breastfeeding mums is making sure she manages her milk supply while on route.

And the images of this multi-tasking feat undertaken at the 13km mark have turned up in social media feeds around the world.

This is the caption on her own Facebook post:

“Yesterday I ran a half marathon at five months postpartum. I had to leave at 4:30am and the race started at 6:45am. I nursed my daughter before I left my house, pumped after running the first 8 miles and nursed her after I made it past the finish line… #normalizebreastfeeding”

In a later interview with Huffington Post, the young mum from Utah said: “I don’t believe most of the people running past me could tell what I was doing, but I did have one woman look back and cheer me on because she knew exactly what I was doing.”

With the hashtag #normalizebreastfeeding, she hopes her story will help encourage other women to shamelessly breastfeed no matter where they are.

“I want other mums to see that you can still take time to do the active things you love and nurture your baby,” she said. “Breastfeeding and motherhood does not limit what I am capable of, it only enhances it.”

So far the post has received 10,000 likes and almost a thousand comments. And except for the odd prudish or narrow-minded, mean spirited response most were congratulatory and in awe.

“Anna , I am a 65 yo female who breast fed her children, and I want you to know, I sit here with tears in my eyes, I am so blasted proud of you!!! You should run for President!! Heck, I’ll write you IN!”

“Definition of a super mum right there! Awesome effort!”

“Impressive, warrior mom doing what needs to be done!”
