Baby girl eaten alive by rats, mother charged with neglect

In a horrible story to come out of South Africa and a mother is facing charges of child neglect after her baby girl died after being eaten alive by giant rats.

According to a report in The New Age a 26-year-old woman reportedly left her child alone at home in Mavimbela Section, Katlehong on the East Rand at the weekend and took the baby’s twin brother, named Lucky, with her to go to a party. She returned later to discover the child had been attacked by rats.

A neighbour who was first on the scene came after hearing screams and recalled seeing that the girl’s tongue, eyes and fingers had been eaten by the rodents.

Katlehong police spokesperson Capt Mega Ndobe reportedly confirmed the incident to local media.

“I can confirm the little girl died after being eaten by rats. The mother has been arrested and is facing charges of child negligence and the case will be heard in court next year,” Ndobe said.

The deceased infant’s brother is now reportedly in the custody of his father.
