A poor dog has reportedly been taken by a bull shark while indulging in an evening swim on Sunday and our hearts just can’t take it.
The pet pup was attacked in the popular off-leash area at Bonna Point Reserve in Kurnell apparently just metres off-shore near the south-eastern headland of Botany Bay, authorities say.
“NSW Department of Primary Industries advises people to avoid swimming or surfing when it is dark or during twilight hours and encourages the use of the SharkSmart app, which has safety tips for swimmers, surfers, divers, snorkelers and spearfishers,” the council said in a statement.
Shark sightings in the area have been on the up in recent weeks, with a juvenile great white shark spotted exploring the shallows in La Perouse earlier in February.
A few days later, a shark was seen in Brighton Le Sands and another juvenile white pointer had travelled 10km inland in the Alexandra Canal – just a hop, skip and a jump from Sydney Airport.
Our thoughts go out to the poor pup’s owners and just a reminder to steer clear from the water at dusk or night – the ocean is a scary place.
