BREAKING: NSW Premier Mike Baird retires from politics

I have decided that this is the perfect time for me to hand the reins over to a new Premier.
NSW Premier Mike Baird resigns from politics

In a shock move, NSW Premier Mike Baird announced his resignation this morning with the decision effective from next week.

Baird said after a decade in politics it was time to move on and make way for a new premier of state, who will be appointed once he leaves the position.

“Serving as premier of NSW has been a tremendous honour, but I have made clear from the beginning that I was in politics to make a difference, and then move on. After 10 years in public life, this moment for me has arrived,” he said in a statement.

“Next week there will be a Liberal party-room meeting and a spill of leadership positions. Following that meeting, I will resign from parliament, effective immediately.”

In a press event held at 10am this morning (Thursday, January 19), Baird attributed his decision to his parent’s and sister’s poor health.

Baird has been an unpopular choice for many due to the contentious WestConnex project, backflip of the greyhound racing ban and controversial lock-out laws, and as such people have taken to Twitter to express how happy they are to see the back of him.

However, others regarded him as a fantastic politician who made a number of great decisions for NSW. They believe he will be sorely missed.
