AFL legend James Hird has been rushed to hospital after a suspected drug overdose.
An ambulance was called to his house following reports of an ‘intentional poisoning overdose’. He was treated at Cabrini Hospital in Malvern, and was later transferred to a specialist mental health facility for further care, the Herald Sun reported.
It comes a few years after the infamous doping scandal of 2013.
Hird was suspended from Essendon in August 2013 for a year following a doping and supplements scandal. He quit as Essendon Football Club coach in August 2015.
The Daily Mail reports Hird had “fallen out with close friends from Essendon following the club’s doping scandal and was putting on a ‘brave face’ before his suspected drug overdose.”
Hird and wife Tania have four children, a daughter and three sons.
