Woman discharges self hours after naturally giving birth to conjoined twins

Doctors are calling for the woman to return to hospital, as it could save the babies lives.

After giving birth to conjoined twins naturally, a mother in India discharged herself within hours, taking the babies with her, against doctors wishes.

Even with every medical marvel, we have available to us; conjoined twins do not have a good chance of survival.

Only occurring once in every 200,000 births, the chances of conjoined twins being stillborn sit between 40 to 60 per cent, and the chances they survive beyond one day is said to be about 35 per cent.

The mother of these conjoined twins apparently had no idea she was having twins, the delivery of the conjoined twins naturally is being described by doctors as “miraculous.”

While the genders of the babies will be unknown without surgery, the babies are both said to have all their limbs and vital organs. Doctors are concerned about their early removal from the hospital as the twins share an umbilical cord.

“If they had had an umbilical cord each it would have made them much stronger babies. Now, they desperately need surgery so they can go on and have a chance,” Explains pediatric surgeon Dr Rahul Aggarwal, the Daily Mail reports.

Dr Aggarwal is the one who delivered the twins and says:

“It was amazing to see the two babies. If we stimulated one, both of them would react and start crying together.”

“The mother and twins were doing well so they were able to go home. However, I referred them to a better hospital with advanced medical facilities so they can seek further treatment.”

“But they have not responded. I am unaware of their whereabouts or if at all they took the twins anywhere else. I can only hope they seek further help.”
