A pill to reverse ageing may only be a few years away

Scientists are gearing up to trial a breakthrough new treatment against ageing after finding a way to successfully reverse the process in mice.

Researchers have discovered that a natural compound present in some fruits and vegetables, including avocados and broccoli, can actually help repair DNA damaged by ageing and exposure to radiation.

The vitamin, called nicotinamide mononucleotide (NAD+), was found to regulate the interactions that control DNA repair, and as a result, the mice that were given the NAD+ booster lived up to 20 per cent longer, and as a bonus even ran faster.

“We took old mice that were 20 months old which is [equivalent to] a 60-70-year-old human and we gave them NMN and we found that… many aspects of ageing were reversed,” said Dr. David Sinclair of Harvard Medical School.

“Their DNA repair activities went up to youthful levels and they were more resistant to radiation and should therefore be more protected against cancer and ageing itself,” he said, adding that the team couldn’t tell the difference between the tissues from a two year old mouse, and one that was three to four months old.

Is this this secret to Blake’s seemingly ageless appearance?

The pill is said to be so good, one of the research team are even taking it themselves. “I’m not supposed to take it but I feel fine, there are no side effects,” Dr Wu says, adding: “I take it out of intellectual curiosity.”

“Essentially every aspect of their ageing process that we looked at is reversed in about a week so we’re very excited to see if this actually happens in people when we test it in the next couple of months,” Dr Sinclair went on.

A human trial for the revolutionary new pill is now set to go ahead in Boston, and if successful may be available in as little as three to five years.

Until then, keep up those night cremes and be sure to SPF every day!
