Why The Voice Australia’s Lucy Sugerman isn’t quitting school just yet

She’s already being tipped as the winner of The Voice, but Lucy is determined to finish her studies before pursuing a career in music.

At just 15, Lucy Sugerman is blowing away competitors twice her age – and more – on The Voice stage.

But while viewers at home may fear she’s been put in a world where she’s being forced to grow up too fast, Lucy says she’s made sure she’s not put into situations outside her comfort zone.

“I’ve been gigging since I was nine so I’m used to being the youngest,” the reigning two-time national busking champion tells TV WEEK.

“Like, sometimes there was a 20-year age gap between me and the next youngest person. I’m used to it, it’s cool and everyone takes care of me.”

And that’s definitely continued on the set of The Voice.

“The team at The Voice, they want to make sure we’re comfortable,” she says.

“They make sure, like the make-up’s not too heavy and the clothes are appropriate kind of thing. They make sure I’m not like, blah, and take notice of the fact that I’m a teen and really accommodate for me which is really great.

“Obviously I’ve been overwhelmed (during the show), not stressed as such, but it’s kind of been like ‘Whoa.’ But the team has been amazing.”

Lucy says she’s also been getting great support from her friends at school – and yes, she will be returning once the live shows are over.

“My friends are so supportive and wonderful about this but they always have been,” she says. “Like they’re just, ‘Oh when’s your next gig?’ and they’ll come and buy my music online and stuff like that.

The Voice is a bit different from school, definitely and it will probably be weird when I have to go back but I guess life goes on. Hopefully there will be a bit more music in my life after this.”
