Why has this divorce announcement video been watched 6 million times?

YouTube stars announce their divorce a year after getting married and the internet goes mad.

In this world of selfies, reality shows and social media sharing, maybe we’re feeling less voyeuristic when we watch people’s lives unravel. But this raw confession video from YouTube star Miranda Sings is gut-wrenching – and internet watchers cannot get enough of it.

Over about 11 minutes Miranda, real name Colleen Ballinger, explains to her legion of fans (she has more than 4.5 million subscribers to her YouTube channel) that 12 months after chronicling her wedding to fellow YouTuber Joshua Evans on social media, they are now getting divorced.

The 29-year-old comedian and actress totally breaks down during the video. “I want to start off by saying Joshua is a wonderful man and I am so in love with him. This has nothing to do with ‘he’s a bad person’ or ‘he did something horrible to me’ or anything like that,” she explains.

Colleen acknowledges that they have included the public in their relationship but she wasn’t always honest about the bad times.

“I don’t regret any of that, but, you know, we chose to not share with you the hard parts of our relationship and there were a lot of hard parts of our relationship. For a long time now I’ve realized just how unhappy we both were. I want Joshua to be happy and I can’t make him happy.”

Joshua has responded with a video of his own called “Heartbreak” which reveals that Colleen, not him, is the one initiating the divorce. His video, which tellingly has moving boxes in the background, has received more than 4 million views.

Colleen, who has a new series about to debut on Netflix, says she is now going to “take a break from the internet” so she can spend time with her family and friends during this difficult time. Joshua plans to do the same so he can “heal in private”.
