Amal Clooney couldn’t help but get emotional when talking about her latest endeavor to bring ISIS to justice.
The celebrated human rights lawyer spoke tearfully about her case and client on the US Today show.
Her client Nadia Murad was captured by the terrorist group and subjected to horrendous sex abuse when she was just 19.
A distraught Nadia told the program that six of her eight brothers were murdered by ISIS during the a mass genocide mission.
“I can’t imagine anything worse being done by one human to another,” Amal said.
Amal was very emotional about her latest battle.
Also shown on Today were snippets of Amal’s powerful speech to the United Nations last week where she brought Nadia’s plight to the public and announced her intentions to take on ISIS for crimes against humanity.
“I wish I could say that I was proud to be here but I’m not,” she told the general assembly. “I’m ashamed as a human being that we ignore their cries for help.”
She’s vowed to take on ISIS no matter how dangerous that may be.
During the interview, the lawyer acknowledged the battle would be dangerous and incredibly risky, but said the risks were outweighed by the need for action.
“I did feel a sense of outrage,” Amal said, of learning of Nadia’s story, as well as the heartbreaking stories of other women and girls.
“It’s been harrowing to hear the testimony of girls as young as 11 and 12, what’s happened to them. And still we haven’t done anything about them.”
Amal says Nadia has gone through so much and deserves justice.
The 38-year-old says bombing ISIS just isn’t enough.
“You can’t kill an idea that way,” she said.
“One way to take action is to expose their brutality and their corruption. And part of the way to do that is through trial.”
She says she asked George before taking on such a risky case.
Amal admitted that she spoke to her husband George Clooney before taking on the case.
“I don’t think anybody can feel that they’re being courageous compared to what Nadia’s doing.
“It’s no joke. This is ISIS, and they have sent her very specific threats saying we will get you back.”
